総合研究博物館本館は東京大学本郷キャンパス本館にありますが、展示公開活動は理学系研究科附属小石川植物園にある小石川分館、丸の内Kitte内のインターメディアテク（学術文化総合ミュージアム）など、学内外さまざまなスペースで展開しています。また、モバイル・ミュージアムという機動的な展示公開は国外もふくめた複数施設で進行中です。
そうした諸施設で展開する展示公開のコンテンツをうむのは学術標本を基軸とした最先端の研究です。本郷本館では、東京大学でおこなわれてきた標本研究の歴史や成果、あるいは最先端の研究現場そのものを、常設展示として公開しています。このサイトは、それをウェブでご覧いただけるようにしたものです。

The University Museum of the University of Tokyo (UMUT) is a multi-faceted research facility of the university. Located on the Hongo Campus, it directs major satellite organizations in the Koishikawa Annex (Koishikawa) and the Intermediatheque (Marunouchi), along with a large number of smaller temporary exhibition units called UMUT Mobile Museums that have been installed across the world.
The exhibitions at these facilities primarily stem from original research conducted at the university. The permanent exhibition at the Hongo Main Building, the UMUT Hall of Inspiration, aims to show how research on natural and cultural history are conducted in the university, displaying scientific specimens related to the history, results, and actual laboratories of the research.
