Fossils as tools for geology
Mission of paleontology in the University of Tokyo in the 1960s and earlier was contribution to geology through studies on fossils. In this situation, fossils were used as tools for understanding strata. Biostratigraphy and structural geology were most important subjects at this time. Paleontology was also frequently connected to geological resource survey. For example fossils were described from coal fields. Dr. Kobayashi is a leading paleontologist studied fossils in relation to geology from the 1930s to the 1960s. After the 1960s, paleontology in the University of Tokyo shifted into more biology-oriented paleontology. (Takenori Sasaki & Yasuhiro Ito)
