研究分野:加速器質量分析・同位体地球化学

超高感度質量分析手法である、加速器質量分析(Accelerator Mass Spectrometry)によって、極微量の同位体を検出・測定することができます。具体的には、Be-10(ベリリウム10)、C-14(炭素14)、Al-26(アルミニウム26)、Cl-36(塩素36)、I-129(ヨウ素129)などです。地球上の物質は、過去の様々な環境変動の記録を同位体情報として記録していますので、加速器質量分析によって地球環境の歴史を読み解くことができます。C-14を利用した年代測定もその一例です。
私たちの研究室では、加速器質量分析による同位体測定技術の開発(同位体測定技術の新規開発や高度化)と、その応用研究の開拓(同位体測定データからどのように地球環境の情報を読み解くか)、という両面からの研究を行っています。
最近では、技術開発研究としては、負イオンとレーザーの相互作用を利用した同重体分離のための装置開発や、U-236(ウラン236)の測定法の開発を行っています。
応用研究では、I-129を利用した地球環境中のヨウ素動態の解明に取り組んでいます。ヨウ素は生体に必須の元素であり、有機物との親和性も高いため炭素循環にも深く関わっています。(最近では、海洋環境におけるヨウ素の化学変化が気候変動にも影響を与えているという報告もあります。)研究のための分析試料は、海水、土壌、サンゴ、堆積物、アイスコアなど天然のアーカイブで、実際にフィールドワークで採取することもあります。これらの試料を実際に化学処理して精製し、加速器質量分析で測定し、解析し、実際の環境動態のモデル化も行っています。

略歴
1966年生まれ。1990年東京大学工学部金属工学科卒業。1999年東京大学大学院理学系研究科物理学専攻修了、博士(理学)取得。東京大学原子力総合研究センター助手、助教授、東京大学大学院工学系研究科原子力国際専攻准教授を経て、2014年より現職。
