略歴
1983年東京大学文学部考古学専修課程卒業、同大学院修士課程・博士課程をへて
1992年英国ロンドン大学大学院博士課程修了(Ph.D)。日本学術振興会特別研究員、
東海大学文学部講師などをへて総合研究博物館助教授、2006年より同教授、2020
年より同館長、2022年よりJPタワー学術文化総合ミュージアム・インターメディア
テク館長。先史考古学専攻。

研究者リストに戻る専門は考古学です。考古標本、特に石器を用いた先史時代の文化史構築に取り組んでいます。中近東をフィールドとして、1984年以来ほぼ毎年、現地調査を続けています。扱っている時代は、化石人類にかかわる旧石器時代から、農耕牧畜が発生した新石器時代、さらには古代文明がうまれた青銅期・鉄器時代まで多岐にわたります。課題ごとにフィールドワークを企画し、そこで得た原標本を多面的に分析している点に研究の特徴があります。また、総合研究博物館に蓄積されている大量の考古学コレクションの整理、データベース化、公開発信もすすめています。人文社会系研究科で西アジア考古学を専攻する大学院生の指導をおこなっているほか、石器研究、世界先史学に関心をもつ各種研究員を受け入れています。
