Krantz Collection
educational specimens in 19th century
When the University of Tokyo was fouded in 1877, there was no specialist in paleontology in Japan. The first professor in paleontology, Naumann was invited from Germany to teach geology and paleontology, and the second professor Brauns was also from Germany. For educational purposes, a large number of fossil specimens were imported from various European countries, especially from Germany. Most specimens were purchased from Dr. Krantz in Bonn, Germany and the collection has been collectively called the Krantz Collection. The collection consists of about 6000 specimens and still used in a lecture for undergraduate students. (Takenori Sasaki & Yasuhiro Ito)
